The greatest ever (single game*) Olympian is understandably a little lame on the acting... It doesn't get the show down though as it is plainly obvious that Phelps is thoroughly enjoying himself and having a LOT of fun throughout the show.
The episode has the greatest intro I have ever seen with Tina Fey (for who I have a gooey soft spot for anyway thanks to 30 rock) doing an impression of Sarah Palin which is alarmingly spot on, lampooning her for her glaring errors. "I can see Russia from by house!” will go down to be one of the most memorable skits of this election.
Other parts of this show I liked were the home schooled game show – against the public school kids. Wiig was good as the mother coming on stage and arguing the most preposterous points. The weekend update’s OJ Simpson joke was especially funny; the idea that OJ’s court case for armed robbery just goes to show that if that is a court case for something, shows you have had one hell of an interesting life…
As for the sketch with the weird kids, I still find it – well – weird... It's the sketch where Wiig’s character, Stacia shows off new skills to their parents friends and keeps saying "I said wah!!”. Maybe that is a common finding in the USA; going over someone’s house and thinking their kids are dorkish. I think I was probably one of those kids to my Dad’s friends. Hmmm.
Pretty good all rounder episode
(*): Being British I am protective that Steve Redgrave is one of the greatest Olympian ever. Five consecutive gold medals over five gold games, rowing is a very different sport from swimming with a lot less medals available… But that is not to diminish Phelps who ability and achievement in Beijing is definitely the stuff of legend.
10/10 (Thanks to the Palin sketch)
