V 1985 The Breakfast Club

A seminal piece of cinema from the eighties, this was the movie that started a genre! Molly Ringwald, Nelson, Michael Hall, Estévez and Sheedy are the original Brat Pack. Each plays a different stereotype namely the Princess, the Criminal, the Brain, the Athlete and the Basket Case. Like 10 Things I Hate About You (tvbyd), these stereotypes are immensely important at the beginning but as the detention progresses they are broken down and each find they share traits of the others.

The believability and quality of the acting is great, as is the suspicion that each character regards the others with from the beginning; they are used to the group mentality where the outsider is different and different means bad.

The only negative I found in the film is how annoyed I was with the ending in terms of the Basket Case’s story – the message coming from the movie was essentially; don’t worry – where make up and all will be fine.

Still a great movie though!

10/10
